About

About Canberra Structural Engineers

An independent structural engineering practice for Canberra homes, small commercial work and the Queanbeyan side of the border. We inspect, diagnose and design, and we provide engineer's letters and certificates.

What kind of practice is this?

An engineering-only one. We give you advice, designs and reports; someone else does the building.

We work for homeowners, buyers and sellers, and for the builders, designers and certifiers on their projects. The work falls into three kinds:

  • Inspections and reports. Structural inspections, crack and footing movement reports, pre-purchase structural inspections, assessments of structures built without approval, dilapidation reports and building defect reports.
  • Design. Beams for wall removal, retaining walls, carports, pergolas and decks, pools, footings and slabs, footings near sewer and stormwater mains, stormwater plans, and the structure for extensions, knock-down rebuilds, granny flats, dual occupancies, heritage homes and small commercial projects.
  • Second opinions, letters and certificates. An independent check of an underpinning or repair quote, and engineer's letters about one specific structure or element.

Each service, with what it includes and its starting price, is on our home services page.

How do we work?

The price is public, the quote comes before anything is booked, and the job starts from what you can already send us.

Published prices

Every priced service shows a from price, ex GST with the inc GST figure beside it. The lowest is $390 + GST ($429 inc GST) for a desktop review. See all prices.

A fixed quote first

Send photos or plans and we reply with a fixed quote in under 20 minutes on average, during business hours. The quote sets the fee and what's included.

Photos and plans first

A desktop review works from the photos, plans, reports or quote you send, with no visit. When a job needs a site visit, your quote says so.

Extensions, knock-down rebuilds, granny flats, dual occupancies, heritage homes and commercial work have no set price, because the size, slope, soil and existing structure change the work. We quote them from your plans or photos. How it works, step by step.

What don't we do?

We don't build, repair or approve anything. There is no repair for us to sell you, so our advice doesn't change with what you buy next.

Contractors who sell underpinning or resin injection often assess for free, because the fix is what they sell. We charge for the assessment and sell nothing after it. Here is what sits outside our work, and who usually handles it:

Not our workWho handles it
Building work and repairs, including underpinning, resin injection and re-levellingA builder or repairer you choose. We don't recommend one.
Building approval and certificationA licensed certifier (building surveyor) you appoint
The seller's building and compliance reportThe seller's inspector. We assess the structures it flags and do structural checks for buyers.
Bushfire attack level (BAL) assessmentsA bushfire consultant
Entering Mr Fluffy roof spaces or subfloors, and asbestos testingA Class A licensed asbestos assessor
Pest inspectionsA pest inspector
Tree assessmentsAn arborist
Land surveysA surveyor

We check the ACT's loose-fill asbestos register before every visit.

Where do we work?

Site visits across every Canberra district, plus Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Googong in NSW, at the same prices. Desktop reviews of photos and plans anywhere in the region.

Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Googong are in New South Wales, so NSW rules apply to approvals there. For a property further out, ask us for a fixed quote. More on the areas we cover.

How do I reach you?

By phone, by email or through the quote form, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.
